Hitler cartoons for auction
Published August 20th, 2005
A collection of newspaper and magazine cartoons poking fun at Adolf Hitler will go under the hammer in Shropshire next week.
Auction house Mullock Madeley said the cartoons were published in a book in Germany in 1933 and were commended by Hitler himself.
Expert Richard Westwood-Brookes said he expected a lot of interest in the book.
The cartoons were collected from the world’s media, including British and American papers.
Mr Westwood-Brookes added: “Some portray Hitler as a ridiculous figure and others show the true sinister nature of his character and intent.
“I would guess that the reason why Hitler approved of such a book just as he came to power was an attempt to reassure the German people that he was at heart a jolly good fellow who could enjoy a joke at his own expense and they had nothing to fear.
