Doubt over Rover MG production as deadline passes
Published August 27th, 2005
Chinese car maker Nanjing Auto is understood to have missed a deadline to pay a multi-million pound bill to MG Rover’s administrator for the assets of the business.
The news casts a question mark over the plans by Nanjing and GB Sports Car to restart making MG and Rover cars in the West Midlands, creating as many as 2,000 jobs.
Nanjing bought Rover, MG and Powertrain, the engine production line, after a bidding war, from the administrator Price Waterhouse Coopers on July 22 for around £53m. Nanjing paid a deposit of around £5m. The £47m balance was due with PWC last Monday.
