Schoolfriend to sell Princess Diana letter

Published August 27th, 2005

A school friend of the late Princess Diana is cashing in on a personal letter containing the former Royal’s teenage thoughts by selling it on internet auction site eBay for £20,000.
Cara Howard says she received the letter - handwritten by the late princess - after Diana left the public school they both went to in 1977. The highly personal letter, in which the late princess speaks of being shocked at receiving a mystery Valentines card, was written when Diana was just 16 and at finishing school in Switzerland.

The letter, in which Diana confesses to stealing hand cream from an aeroplane and “over-eating”, was written just four years before she married Prince Charles in 1981. The demand for Diana memorabilia has rocketed since her death in 1997 - to the point where even slices of her wedding cake sell for hundreds of pounds at auction.

Mrs Howard, 43, says she is cashing in on the personal letter because she “needs the money.”

In an extract of the letter released by Mrs Howard, Diana writes to her school chum: “When I got back here I had a valentine card waiting for me - yes, it was a shock for me as well! It’s really bugging me as I can’t think who sent it!

“There has been no skiing this week due to it raining (I can’t seem to get away from her!) so we have all been v bored, so have taken to swimming and causing tidal waves due to overeating and also I have been picking my nose - which is not pretty but it takes the time away!”

The letter, dated February 26, is scrawled on an airmail envelope, and is signed “L of L Diana x”.
