Christies Exploration and Travel Auction
Published September 12th, 2005
On 21 September in London, Christie’s, the fine art auctioneers, will hold a series of sales devoted to exploration and travel in which the exploits of Captain James Cook (1728-1779) will play a prominent part.
His green glass snow goggles (estimate £2,000-£3,000), his sledging harness (£2,000-£3,000), and Captain Oates’s paisley bandana (£400-£600) will be offered for sale. Although his expedition was a tragic failure, “Scott of the Antarctic” became a British hero.
