Bumper Christmas expected for online retailers

Online shopping is predicted to rise 12% during the lucrative Christmas season, according to new research, with UK shoppers relying more and more on the Internet for gift buying this year.
Web monitoring firm Hitwise said the online retail sector is expected to grow 25% in share of visits from July 2005 to December 2005, representing a 12% year-on-year increase since December 2004.

Hitwise goes on to assert that visits to online retailers will peak the week ending 3 December 2005, with more than 1 in every 7 internet visits going to online retailers that week.

The peak will be driven by visits to eBay UK, whose traffic peaks earlier than most other online retailers.
