The Tube sign to go under the hammer

Published September 23rd, 2005

A famous neon sign from groundbreaking North-East TV show The Tube will go under the auctioneer’s hammer today. The iconic sign is just one of several unique items to be sold in the auction at Newcastle’s former Tyne Tees Studios. The sell-off will also see a grand piano played by The Tube’s presenter Jools Holland up for grabs. The nostalgic items have attracted a huge amount of interest both from private collectors and enthusiasts to museums and even the owner of a Tyneside pub. The auction, which will take place this morning at the old Tyne Tees building on City Road, Newcastle, has been prompted by ITV’s decision to relocate to smaller studios in Gateshead. Presented by Jools Holland and the late Paula Yates, The Tube ran from 1982 to 1987 and was a showcase for many emerging performers in the 1980s, including a young Madonna, who made her first UK TV appearance on the show.
