Rare Guernsey football programme auctioned

Published October 21st, 2005

A rare programme previewing the only British football match to be banned by the Nazis has been sold at an auction for £320.
The programme, for a match arranged in occupied Guernsey on 8 June 1943, was estimated to fetch £70-£100.
The game between island team Les Vauxbelets Old Boys Association and a Continental XI of slave labourers was “verboten” by the occupiers.
Shropshire auctioneers Mullock Madeley were unsurprised at the interest.

Documents expert Richard Westwood-Brookes said: “This is possibly the only copy of this programme in existence.”
