Bird auction with no birds defies virus threat

Organisers of a weekly bird auction in Derby have said it will continue - but without any birds.
The government last week said it was stopping all bird sales until the end of November as a precaution against the spread of Avian Flu.
Up to 200 people meet every Thursday for an auction at the Meadows Inn on Chequers Road.
Members have voted for it to continue for the time being, but will only sell cages and other equipment.

Margaret White, from Derby bird auctions, said people understood the reasons why the sales had to be limited.
“They do realise that it has got to be like this. Rather than leaving it, like with Foot and Mouth, to spread from area to area.
“That lead to mass destruction which is what we are trying to avoid.”
