Unknown Constable painting fails to sell

Published November 25th, 2005

A previously unknown painting by John Constable, discovered in a Japanese collector’s store, has failed to make its reserve at auction.

The oil sketch of Dedham Vale in Suffolk, where John Constable grew up, was expected to fetch between £80,000 and £120,000 at auction at Sotheby’s.

The landscape, completed in about 1810, failed to meet even the lower end of the estimate at Thursday’s auction.

Sotheby’s said it could not reveal the reserve price.
