Copies of Friday and Saturday’s special editions of the Belfast Telegraph marking the life and times of football legend George Best are selling for £2 on internet auction site eBay.
Eleven copies of the papers, which include pages of tributes to Ulster’s much-loved son from many of those who knew him both on and off the pitch, were up for grabs last night.
Friday’s Telegraph, which has a picture of Best on the pitch during his glory days, along with his famous quote “Remember me for my football” has a starting bid of £1.50.
The edition includes 16 pages of tributes reflecting on the life and times of the football hero, from his days as a football star at Manchester United to his sad decline.
Saturday’s edition, with a picture of the shrine at Old Trafford under the headline “United in Grief”, has a starting bid of 99p.
It includes stories on the family’s heartbreaking statement after his death and the reaction of the people of Belfast to the news as well as more tributes from many of those who knew him.
Both copies can be bought on the “Buy It Now” scheme for £2 which prevents others bidding a higher price for the collectors’ items.
The legend’s death has sparked a renewed surge of interest in his life. Within hours of his death, other items of memorabilia were also flooding eBay.
Items ranged from videos to mugs, as well as a limited edition of his autobiography which is on offer for a starting price of £2,000.
A signed copy of Always Alex, Best’s second wife’s autobiography, went for £16, while Best’s own autobiography, Scoring at Half-Time, sold for £95 having started at £60.
Signed programmes were going for upwards of £50.
