Drambuie auction exceeds expectations

An auction of Scottish art, described as the greatest to come on the market for a quarter of a century, has “exceeded expectations”.
The first day of a sale of items belonging to the MacKinnon family, which owns the whisky liqueur-making firm Drambuie, generated £2.6m.

A still life by Scottish colourist Samuel J Peploe fetched £220,000.

Many of Scotland’s most famous painters were featured in the sale at Lyon and Turnbull on Thursday.

Auction organiser Paul Roberts said global interest in the collection saw prices exceed expectations.

Mr Roberts said: “All the marketing that we have put into it over the past five or six months has obviously paid dividends.

“Bids have come from the west and east coasts of America, the Far East, Hong Kong and from London and the rest of the UK.
