1920s Jersey football cap for auction
Published April 20th, 2006
A cap owned by a footballer who played in the Muratti in the 1920s is to be auctioned next month.
The cap belonged to the Jersey football captain Percy Kemp who played in the 1920 Muratti after World War I. It is expected to fetch about £600.
The competition was won by Alderney, the only time it has won the Muratti.
It is an annual contest, begun in 1905, between the Channel Islands of Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney who play for a trophy called the Muratti Vase.
Since its inception, the Muratti has only been interrupted during WWI and WWII.
Teams wear their island colours of green and white for Guernsey and red and white for Jersey. Games are also played by under-21s and ladies.
Mr Kemp added a special 1921 date tag to his cap after scoring the winning penalty in a one-nil victory over Guernsey.
The auction will take place on 8 May.
