Online payments service PayPal is set to launch a mobile payments service in the UK by the end of this month.
The PayPal Mobile service will let people to buy goods by sending money through their mobile phones.
It will also enable PayPal users to send money to each other via their mobile phones using the company’s person-to-person payment service.

The eBay-owned company said both services will be available to mobile phone users across the UK, US and Canada from the end of April 2006.

Using PayPal Mobile’s “Text to Buy” service, consumers can pay for items by sending product codes via text message.

Items will be delivered to home addresses already saved in the buyers’ PayPal accounts.

Once merchants sign up to the service, they will be able to open new direct sales channels to buyers.
The company said the service will mean when consumers see an ad for a product or service offering a PayPal text code, be it in a magazine, on TV or on a billboard, they will be able to purchase products immediately via their mobile.

PayPal Mobile will also enable users to donate money to charities instantly.

Geoff Iddison chief executive of PayPal Europe said: “The system will kick-start mobile payments in the UK and globally, and revolutionise the way people pay, as well as how companies can track advertising effectiveness.
