Accrington nightclub fails to sell at property auction
Published June 9th, 2006
An historic building in the centre of Accrington has failed to sell at auction.
The four-storey former Conservative Club in Cannon Street, which was latterly the home of Churchills nightclub, was expected to attract bids of over £500,000.
But the agents acting for the sellers of the building have said they will now consider offers for the site.
At an auction at Manchester Airport, the Grade II listed building had a bottom guide price of £450,000, which was not met.
Auctioneers Pugh and Company said they would now put the property on the list for their next event in July if it failed to sell in the meantime.
The 19th century building has been vacant for a number of years after Churchills nightclub shut down.
Churchills first closed in July 2002 following the death of a Padiham teenager, who was attacked at the club in May that year. It reopened in the August but after a drop in adult business it became an under-18s venue, before eventually closing for good in November 2003.
The site was originally the home of Accrington Conservative Club and contained a massive 1,000-capacity ballroom.
