Sothebys Holdings Inc. took in 88.8 million pounds ($164 million) last night from a packed sale of Impressionist and modern art, kicking off a week of London auctions.
An Amedeo Modigliani portrait came near the artist’s record, a Lyonel Feininger work set a record and a Pablo Picasso painting of Dora Maar failed to sell. The New Bond Street salesrooms attracted about 600 people, more than the typical 500. Sotheby’s, which runs neck-and-neck with rival Christie’s International Plc in London, had valued the 56 lots at 64.3 million pounds to 91 million pounds.
