After months of anticipation, the ‘Veldman’ collection of Indian Feudatory States went under the hammer at Stanley Gibbons on 15 June 2006. Great interest amongst the philatelic community, coupled with the quality of the items in the collection, resulted in a 100 per cent sell out—every one of the 378 lots being snapped up—a rare achievement in stamp auctioneering today.
The stamps of the Indian Feudatory States were generally valid only for use within the state of issue. For this reason and because of their often complex nature, many collectors have tended to ignore them, although they have always had a small but devoted following among some of the world’s most eminent philatelists. In recent years their popularity has been growing as serious collectors have found their complexity and often primitive designs and production methods to be the perfect antidote to the multicoloured labels being issued in huge quantities every year by the world’s postal administrations. The fact that the last Indian State stamp to be issued appeared in 1950 has only added further to their appeal.
