THE Australian Geelong Gallery has paid $3.8 million to British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber for a painting by colonial artist Eugene von Guerard.

The painting, View of Geelong, will arrive in Australia within eight weeks.

The price asked by auction house Christie’s on behalf of Lord Lloyd Webber, who bought the painting 10 years ago, is the second highest ever for an Australian work of art, after the $5.3 million paid by the National Gallery of Australia for a portrait of Captain James Cook by John Webber.
