A lost masterpiece by Leslie Hunter, one of the Scottish Colourists, has been rediscovered and will be offered as an extra lot in Bonhams’ Scottish Sale on August 24th. The picture is expected to make £150,000-200,000.

Dr Chris Brickley, Head of Bonhams Pictures in Scotland says : “This is an example of how the worlds of art and media can produce a very happy result. Press coverage in the Edinburgh Evening News about the Hunters in our Made in Scotland sale was spotted by one of the newspaper’s readers and as a result he invited Bonhams to see one of his pictures.”

“The picture was hanging in the corner of a room full of bright, bold modern pictures but it immediately caught my eye. It has a freshness and exuberance which is all too rare, and is one of the finest Colourist still life pictures I have seen in a private home.”

Colourists Hunter and SJ Peploe were largely responsible for reintroducing and pioneering the still life tradition in British painting in the 20thc, and their works are now much sought-after by collectors worldwide.
