Norfolk Priest’s letter to be auctioned by Spink of London
Published September 3rd, 2006
When a Norfolk priest arrived in New Zealand two centuries ago to set up a Christian mission, he decided to let his good friend back home know what life was like with the Maoris.
The letter from Wymondham missionary the Rev James Kemp to local solicitor John Mitchell was dated February 26, 1820, and is believed to be the second earliest letter from New Zealand in private hands.
The historic document, a copy of which is in Wymondham’s town archive, is to be auctioned on October 3 by Spink of London with a guide price of £1,000-£1,200.
