Christie’s launched extra October sales, and this year is offering art valued at 30 million pounds.
It aims not only at wealthy buyers vying for top lots like Peter Doig’s “Pink Mountain”, valued at 500-700,000 pounds, or Marlene Dumas’ “The Cover-Up” (350-450,000 pounds), but also at younger collectors looking for less expensive art.
Christie’s is also concentrating on the rapidly expanding contemporary Chinese art market, with works including Zhang Xiao Gang’s “A Big Family Series” (estimated at 320,000-400,000 pounds) and “Mao” by Yan Pei Ming (120,000-180,000 pounds).
Its main rival Sotheby’s has also expanded October sales due to the growing importance of Frieze, and expects to sell more than 20 million pounds this year.
The October sales are the warm-up to both auctioneers’ big contemporary auctions in New York in mid-November.
