A Telegram saying the Titanic was safe 18 hours after it sank is set to fetch £10,000 at auction. It was sent by the ship’s owners White Star Line to US senator James Hughes who had heard rumours of the tragedy in which 1,523 died. The message said: “Titanic proceeding to Halifax, passengers will probably land there Wednesday all safe.” His newlywed and pregnant daughter Eloise Smith, above, did survive but she had to kiss goodbye to husband Lucian. The telegram led to initial reports the Titanic had not sunk.
