Bonhams is selling a pair of shotguns once owned by the most famous designer of locomotives in Britain – Sir Nigel Gresley – whose `Mallard’ still holds the 126mph world speed record for a steam locomotive.

Bonhams Fine Modern Sporting Guns and Vintage Firearms Sale takes place at Bonhams Knightsbridge office on November 29.

Sir Nigel’s pair of 12-bore boxlock ejector guns, made by Charles Lancaster, is estimated to attract bids in the region of £4,000 to £6,000 for these guns made in 1899. They come in their original leather cases with H.N. Gresley embossed on them. Among Sir Nigel’s many engineering triumphs is the design of the legendary Flying Scotsman and the world speed loco Mallard. When not working on new designs he spent many happy days shooting on Scottish grouse moors.

Patrick Hawes, Head of Sporting Guns at Bonhams, comments: “These guns are fine examples of their type, but their provenance gives them added glamour. Whoever buys Sir Nigel Gresley’s shotguns will hold in his hands weapons which were once held by a world-beating engineer whose brilliance with steam left a lasting legacy and a world speed record in British keeping.”
