Lowry sells for 1.4 million pounds

A painting by Salford artist LS Lowry was sold for 1.4 million pounds on Friday, the second highest price achieved at auction for one of his works.

The 1947 painting, “A River Bank”, was put up for sale by Bury Council to help balance its books and reached nearly twice its top pre-sale estimate.

Auctioneers Christie’s said the painting, an industrial landscape based on the River Irwell in Salford, was bought by a private buyer bidding by telephone.

Lowry (1887-1976) is one of the most collectable British artists, best known for his pictures of northern industrial life peopled with matchstick-like characters.

In June, Lowry’s painting of the Liver Building in Liverpool sold for 1 million pounds, twice its presale estimate.

The record price for a Lowry is the 1.9 million pounds paid in 1999 by the Professional Footballers’ Association for “Going To The Match,” his 1953 image of a crowd on the way to a Bolton football game.
