Star Wars R2 D2 head up for auction

R2-D2’s head is going under the hammer this week and is expected to fetch more than £50,000.

But the iconic blue and silver dome of Luke Skywalker’s robotic sidekick could have been lost forever after it was dumped in a tip five years ago, reports the Daily Mirror.

Film studios in Elstree, Herts, threw away the model and made a new lighter version after 72-year-old actor Kenny Baker, who played the robot, complained that it was too heavy.

R2-D2’s old head is set to be auctioned by Los Angeles auction house Profiles In History on Friday.

A spokesperson for the auctioneers said: “Kenny was almost 70 when he operated R2-D2 for The Phantom Menace.
