A collection of rare prints by Scottish artist James McBey is set to be put up for auction in Edinburgh this week.

Around 100 prints, ranging in price from £200 to £3000, will be put on sale by city auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull on Thursday.

The artwork includes rare sketches from his early career.

The Aberdeen artist, who died in 1959, was inspired by Rembrandt and is considered one of the most important early 20th-century etchers.

A spokesman for Lyon & Turnbull said: “This collection encompasses many of McBey’s most striking works, together with some small original sketches. We are also delighted to include the ceremonial dagger presented to McBey by the British Expeditionary Force during his service as the official war artist in Egypt.”

The sale is due to take place at Lyon & Turnbull’s on Broughton Street on Thursday at 11am.
