Press Release
Bonhams annual Sale of Motor Cars and Automobilia at Hendon, will, this year, feature selected vehicles from the renowned Yorkshire Car Collection. On 30 April, at the Royal Air Force Museum, Bonhams will sell 25 vehicles from the collection, including a 1923 Bugatti Brescia Two Seater, once owned by Brooklands regular race winner, Major Bertram Austin.
The car was delivered new to the major in April 1923 and despite losing both his legs in The Great War, he actively campaigned the Bugatti until 1929. It remained in his ownership until his death in 1966, passing then to his son, from whom The Yorkshire Car Collection acquired the car some 35 years ago. It is expected to fetch £60,000-80,000.
Other cars to be sold from the collection on 30 April, include: a circa 1879 Otto Dicycle (£15,000-20,000), an 1895 horse-drawn steam fire engine by W Rose & Co of Manchester (£14,000-18,000), a 1908 Lanchester 20hp Landaulette (£35,000-45,000), an iconic 1958 Chevrolet Corvette (£15,000-20,000), a 1969 AC 428 Frua Convertible (£20,000-24,000) and a Hagan Speedway motorcycle (£2,000-2,500).
The Yorkshire Car Collection was started in the early 1960s by the late Peter Black of Keighley, a noted West Riding industrialist, who took up car collecting on the advice of his doctor, Noel Marshman, a Veteran Car Club stalwart. The third generation of the Black family continue to take an active interest in the collection but have decided that some rationalisation is now necessary to reflect their current areas of interests.
A core collection of vehicles will be retained by the Black family, including all of their London to Brighton motor cars. They will continue to take a keen interest in the event which they have actively supported for over 40 years.
Motoring Department Director, Stewart Skilbeck, said: “I have known this collection from its inception and am delighted that Bonhams has received instructions to handle this part dispersal. The 25 vehicles to be sold reflect the widest of motoring and transport tastes and interests, with a notable section devoted to American cars covering four decades from the late 1930s onwards.â€
