Batmobile sold at Coys London auction

Batman and Robin’s famous car from the cult 1960s show has been sold for £120,000 at auction in London.

The Batmobile featured in a collection of some of the world’s finest cars - including several vintage Ferraris and a Lamborghini Countach owned by musician Barry Gibb of Bee Gees fame - to go under the hammer at Coy’s.

The Lincoln Futura was designed in 1955 by a division of the Ford Motor Company. Built entirely by hand in Italy, the concept car cost £127,000 to make.

Ten years later, producers of the Batman show approached its new owner, famous US car customiser George Barris - who is said to have bought the unwanted futuristic vehicle for just $1 - and asked him to come up with a model for the show.

Barris - who also customised the Dukes of Hazzard’s General Lee, the Beverly Hillbillies’ jalopy and Starsky and Hutch’s Ford Gran Torino - felt the Futura had just the right amount of “bat-like qualities” and the famous car was born.
