A get-well-soon letter written by the Queen when she was 11 sold at auction for double its estimated price.
The letter, to Lady Mary Cambridge, went to a private collector for £1,140, including buyer’s premium.
It was expected to fetch between £500 and £600. Written on January 7 1938 on Sandringham headed notepaper, it says: “I am so sorry that you have had to go to bed and were not able to go to the party.”
The Princess gives details of riding adventures and signs off with the familiar name: “Lilibet”.
It was the highlight of a sale of stamps and covers at auctioneers Spink in London.
A spokeswoman for Spink said: “It was shocking how much it went for. It is a very special letter written by the Queen as a child.
“It is a nice piece of memorabilia from the Royal Family.”
