Climbing the Stairs by LS Lowry (1887-1976) is estimated at £50,000- £60,000 and goes to auction this weekend at Ramsay Cornish Auctioneers in Leith.
Purchased direct from the artist in 1957 by a Manchester printing family, Climbing the Stairs, (c.1957) appears on the open market for the first time. It has a strongly contemporary feel with an unusual element of humour and features Lowry’s signature matchstick men.
There has been wide interest throughout the UK from both galleries and private buyers.
Throughout the auction viewings, until 5pm today and from 9.30am tomorrow, three letters from the artist to the buyer, will be displayed for the first time.
In these simple and endearing letters, the purchaser states his wish to buy one of Lowry’s “Little Men”. Lowry replies, ‘What sort of “little man” does your son want?’
