Twenty eight art works by the painter, who died last year, will be auctioned in Bath with some of the larger work expected to reach up to £50,000.

Auctioneers said it was a rare chance “to see something of the man behind the canvas”.

Jeff Muse, of auctioneers Bonhams said their had been exceptionally strong interest in the artist’s works from around the UK ahead of Monday’s auction.

One of the paintings going under the hammer, a dramatic oil called Rocks At Glyderfach, is estimated to fetch between £30,000 and £50,000.

“We could see a new record for one of Sir Kyffin’s paintings if it does reach that kind of price,” said Mr Muse.

Also included in the sale is a pen and ink drawing of the Royal Crescent in Bath, which has an estimate of £1,500 to £2,000.

Mr Muse said he had always understood Sir Kyffin’s close association with the Welsh contemporary art scene.

The sale also includes Sir Kyffin’s favourite easy chair and Welsh dresser.

Bonhams has been asked by the artist’s beneficiaries to sell a number of his household items, including a red 1920s’ chair.
