Copy of General Grants letter to General Lee up for auction

A letter handwritten by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant to Gen. Robert E. Lee on April 10, 1865, at Appomattox Courthouse will be auctioned early next month by an Atlanta auction house.
The letter, which discusses terms of surrender of the Confederate Army, will be sold on the weekend of Aug. 4 and 5 by the auction house Gallery 63.
The letter, which has an estimated value of $500,000, was consigned by a Texas woman and was authenticated by the late Civil War historian Shelby Foote.
