A pair of John Lennon’s “granny” sunglasses have been snapped up at auction by a British collector.

Auction organisers have refused to divulge how much the gold-rimmed glasses went for but they were expected to fetch £1 million.

Lennon wore them on one of the last Beatles concerts during the band’s 1966 tour of Japan.

Translator Junishi Yore removed the lenses on the day Lennon was shot dead outside his New York apartment on December 8, 1980.

Interest in the pair was sparked from potential buyers as far afield as the United States, Russia, Japan and Europe.

John Warner, sales and marketing director of the specialist musical memorabilia auctioneer991.com, said: “We can’t reveal the figure because of a confidentiality agreement with the buyer.”

He later gave them to his Japanese interpreter.
