EAST ANGLIAN ARTISTS VIEW OF VENICE AT BONHAMS SALE IN NORWICH
Published August 4th, 2007
An atmospheric view of Venice is a surprising component of Bonhams East Anglian View sale this month. It was painted by one of Norfolk’s best-known 20th century landscape artists Edward Brian Seago (1910-1974).
“Chiesa della Salute- Venice ” is estimated to sell for £15,000-20,000 and is just one of a collection of pictures by Seago (with some more familiar views of Suffolk and Norfolk) included in this year’s sale on 25 October, at Norwich’s Assembly Rooms.
Seago was a largely self taught painter who started developing his craft when he was invalided as a child in Norwich - though his parents remained rather unmoved by his burgeoning talent. During his early years as a professional artist he spent much of his time capturing the unspoilt coast and countryside of East Anglia but later he began to travel more widely across Europe and North Africa. He became a favoured landscape painter of the Royal family and accompanied HRH The Duke of Edinburgh on his trip to the Falkland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula, in 1956.
Bonhams’ October East Anglian View sale celebrates almost every aspect of this picturesque region of England and will include silver, ceramics, clocks and antiquarian books and maps. The sale also includes work by other well known 20th century artists such as Sir Alfred Munnings, Mary Newcomb, Mary Fedden and John Piper and paintings by some important artists from the 19th century Norwich and Suffolk schools.
