Livestock auctions off due to foot and mouth

LIVESTOCK auctions in East Lancashire have been called off due to the outbreak of foot and mouth in Surrey.

But organisers of the Trawden Agricultural Show have vowed that the event will go ahead without some of the usual livestock.

Lancashire livestock markets taking place on Monday in Clitheroe, Gisburn, Brock and Lancaster have all been cancelled and will remain off until the ban on the movement of livestock is withdrawn.

Richard Turner, auctioneer and secretary of Gisburn Auction, said: “We have been closed since Saturday and expect to be closed for another 10 days as there is a two week incubation period for the disease.

“The Government has acted swiftly so far and it looks like the source and the strain of the diseases has been found and isolated so hopefully we will be back running within a few weeks.

“I know from farmers that I have spoken to that they are really upset about the new cases and are very concerned about loss to their livelihood, especially as it is a very busy time of year for the selling of livestock.”
