A golf club is expected to sell for £6000 at a New York auction.

The driver was made around a century ago by Hardy Brothers in Alnwick, Northumberland, better known for its high-quality fishing rods and reels.

Stamped “Hardy Bros. Alnwick”, it goes under the hammer in New York on September 27.

A spokesman for auctioneers Sotheby’s said: “This is one of the first clubs to try using a steel core in the shaft. It also uses steel wire around the outside of the shaft and has a huge cork grip and copper wire whipping, all original. This is the only known example.”

Sotheby’s believe the club was made around 1907.
