Great Yarmouth disaster painting for Bonhams auction
Published October 18th, 2007
Cornelius Winter’s depiction of the collapse of the Yarmouth Suspension Bridge crossing the River Bure in 1845, resulting in the loss of at least 79 lives, will be among lots up for auction at the Norwich auction house at the end of this month.
The picture shows rescuers in rowing boats desperately trying to haul people from the water moments after the bridge collapse and has been valued at between £500 and £800.
The painting will be one of a number of items recalling Great Yarmouth’s history at Bonhams’ annual East Anglian View sale, which opens at the Assembly House in Theatre Street, Norwich next Tuesday.
