Colwyn Bay eBay fraudster given curfew

Joseph Bellis used photographs from catalogues to display on the internet auction site, conning customers into bidding for earrings, vases, cups and saucers, and a Clarice Cliff biscuit barrel, the Llandudno court heard.
District judge Andrew Shaw sentenced the 55-year-old to a two-month curfew operating between 8pm and 8am three nights a week.
Jobless Bellis, of Mostyn Road, Colwyn Bay, had cashed cheques totalling £759 but the buyers never received anything, said prosecutor James Neary.
Bellis pleaded guilty to making a false representation by advertising items for sale last December. Two offences were taken into consideration.
Donald Roberts, defending, said, “He got the idea from the television exposing somebody who perpetrated such a scam.”
Compensation amounting to £379 was awarded to the three victims. Bellis must also attend an alcohol clinic arranged by the probation service for one day.
