London Russian art auctions

Published November 26th, 2007

London’s auction houses hope to smash new records this week as a treasure trove of Russian art goes under the hammer here starting Monday.

Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Bonham’s and McDougall’s believe prices will be fueled by wealthy Russians seeking to bring treasures home either to put on display or for their own private enjoyment.

“It’s our biggest week, our most valuable week,” said Christie’s spokesman Matthew Paton, estimating total sales could balloon up to 38 million pounds.
“The whole Russian market has exploded,” added another official from the auction house.
