Francis Bacon three part painting expected to fetch £25 million
Published January 7th, 2008
A Francis Bacon painting is expected to set a new record for an Irish or British work, at a London auction on Feb. 6.
“Triptych 1974-77,” is one of a series of works Bacon painted after the suicide of his lover George Dyer in 1971. The three canvases depict a contorted figure on a beach, overlooked by two enigmatic, vaguely ominous figures. Dyer had committed suicide on the eve of the opening of Bacon’s last retrospective in Paris, in the hotel room he shared with the artist. Many of Bacon’s works after this moment were preoccupied with his lover and the tragic manner of his death.
Pilar Ordovas, head of Christie’s postwar and contemporary art department, said the triptych was “a monumental work” and one of the most important Bacon pieces to appear at auction.
The painting, is being sold by a private collector.
