Proposal to abandon live lamb auctions draws angry response

Published January 18th, 2008

CUMBRIAN auctioneers have reacted angrily to calls from a farmers’ group for live prime lamb auctions to be abandoned.

The Carlisle Discussion Group of seven farmers, including Alistair Mackintosh from Ravenglass and John Hall from Inglewood Edge, wrote to every mart in the north of England and Scotland last month.

The letter calls for marts to act as collection centres where farmers would know the price per kilogram when they enter lambs. No auction would take place in the ring under the proposed system, which it claims would give farmers more power to influence prices. www.cumberland-news.co.uk
