Lyon & Turnbull are to to sell the £350,000 Mowson Collection of East Anglian paintings at an auction on July 9th 2008 in Norwich.

Director of Lyon & Turnbull South and Paintings Specialist Mary Axon said “This will be one of the most important sales of East Anglian paintings in recent times, the Collection includes a number of significant landscapes from the Norfolk and Suffolk Schools, and a wonderful pair of marine subjects by Joseph Stannard”.

Norfolk businessman John Mowson, has collected the paintings over a period of fifty years, buying his first painting by the East Anglian School at an auction in Suffolk for £30. He sold it for the handsome profit of £50 and was hooked. He said “I will be sad to see them go, but I have decided that it is time for others to enjoy them as much as I have”.

The collection includes a pair by Joseph Stannard (1797-1830): ‘Off Corton’ and ‘Off Yarmouth’, valued at £100,000-150,000; an oil by John Moore of Ipswich (1820-1902): ‘Vessels at Anchor at Sunset’ at £2,500-3,500; ‘The Snowball Fight’ by Thomas Smythe (1825-1906) at £4,000-6,000; and ‘The Bathing Hut – Figures on Gorleston Beach’ by Campbell Archibald Mellon (1876-1955) at £8,000-12,000. There is also an oil by Edward Seago (1910-1974): ‘Gorleston Quay’ valued at £12,000-18,000; and a watercolour by Stephen John Batchelder (1849-1932): ‘Wroxham Broad’ at £2,500-3,500.

The sale will take place on July 9th 2008 at the Assembly House in Norwich. It will be the second sale that Lyon & Turnbull have held in the region: the first being the Keith Skeel Collection at Loudham Hall, Suffolk in June 2007, which raised over £2 million.

Paul Roberts, Vice Chairman of Lyon & Turnbull, said “We are investing time and energy in expanding our presence in East Anglia and this has been enhanced by the appointment of Mary Axon as our Regional Director. We are holding our second sale in the region in the summer, building on the considerable success we have achieved to date.”

Further entries are being invited for this sale and more details of the Mowson Collection will be made available as soon as possible.
