Scottish Water asked to stop loch auctions

Published April 22nd, 2008

SHETLAND MSP Tavish Scott has called for an immediate moratorium on the sale of local lochs owned by Scottish Water.

In the face of great hostility, Scottish Water auctioned off eight lochs and six pump houses in Shetland in 2005, raising just £20,000, barely enough to cover the cost of the auction.

Last week water minister Stewart Stevenson told the Scottish Parliament the government was looking into the best way of returning to local communities any land, including lochs, handed over to public utilities. www.shetland-news.co.uk
