Medals won by a Highlands piper in the 1800s and put up for auction without one of his descendant’s knowledge have not been sold as planned.

London auctioneers Spink said there were no bids for the collection, but could not comment further because of client confidentiality.

Sandy Corbett, from Avoch in the Black Isle, won the decorations for service in Afghanistan and Egypt.

Auctioneers had expected the medals to achieve between £6,000 and £7,000.

The soldier’s grandson, Douglas Corbett, of Annan, Dumfries, said the auction was arranged without the family’s knowledge.
