1759 Dutch Wine Glass for Auction June 4

Published April 28th, 2008

An exquisitely engraved Dutch wine glass that dates from 1759 is the top lot in Bonhams sale of The Thomas Collection on 4 June.

Lot 56 is a fine Dutch engraved light-baluster goblet of English origin, signed by Jacob Sang, made at a time when the Netherlands maritime power was a global force. The glass has a finely engraved funnel bowl featuring a three-masted sailing ship in a harbour scene, with bales and casks being loaded on to horse-drawn sleds. The reverse shows a stylised view of the Old Customs House in Amsterdam with the goods being weighed. The glass has a slender multi-knopped stem and wide conical foot. This distinguished glass is estimated to sell for £12,000-18,000 at Bonhams in New Bond Street.
