Rescued Table Makes £40,000 at Shrewsbury Auction

Published May 25th, 2008

A rare table rescued from a rubbish skip was auctioned for £40,000 yesterday, when it went under the hammer at Halls auctioneers at Shrewsbury.

The table by designer Edward William Godwin is thought to be one of only two left in existence.

Jeremy Lamond, fine art director at Halls, who spotted and identified the table, said the only other known Godwin table was kept at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

“As soon as I walked into the room I spotted the table and my heart skipped a beat,” he said.

“It’s virtually identical to the image on the front cover of the book The Secular Furniture of EW Godwin by Susan Soros, which I have in my office.

“To the untrained eye it could be passed off as an Edwardian occasional table worth around £30, but I recognised the brass fittings and immediately thought it was by Godwin.”
