An important 17th century oil painting of Thomas Boothby of Tooley Park, Leicestershire (1681-1752) attributed to Jonathan Richardson Snr (1665-1745) is to be sold by auction at Tennants in Leyburn, North Yorkshire in their Summer Catalogue Sale on 17-19 July 2008.
The portrait (Lot 1309) shows Thomas Boothby Esq., First Master of the Quorn, of Tooley Park, Leicestershire, standing, three quarter length holding a shotgun with his two sporting dogs by his side and is estimated to sell for £5,000 – £7,000. The painting measures 127cm by 102cm in size and was exhibited at the Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, “Sport in the Midlands Exhibition”.
The artist, Jonathan Richardson Snr, was born in London in 1664/5 and died in May 1745, a pupil of Charles Ruben Ryley (Riley) and his heir. His writings, especially the “Theory of Painting” of 1715 and, in collaboration with his son, “The Account of the Works of Art the Grand Tourist should see in Italy” 1722 were immensely influential.
