Online Wine Auctions to Commence in the UK
Published October 3rd, 2008
Bid for Wine, the new online wine auction site, will be launched on 24th October, allowing wine enthusiasts to trade bottles simply, easily and cheaply for the first time.
Private individuals and merchants can now buy and sell bottles or whole cases kept either in their possession or in professional storage, with commissions as low as 5.5%
The service will create a whole new market for wine. Buyers will have a far greater selection of wines to choose from, buying easily from private collections and other sources without expensive commissions. Rare and ready-aged wines, in particular, will become far more available and affordable.
And potential sellers, including anyone with a bottle or more they want to sell, will be able to sell wine conveniently and inexpensively. This will allow them to tailor their cellar as their tastes evolve, selling parcels or even single bottles of wine conveniently via the internet.
HOW IT WORKS
Bid for Wine is firstly a peer-to-peer auction site, meaning that its users deal with one another directly. Users register for a free account on the website and can then use a simple 5 step process to create auctions. Once the wine sells, the seller arranges takes payment for the wines via Paypal or another method if preferred and arranges delivery to the buyer.
As the sale of alcohol is a licensable activity, some users may not be eligible to create peer-to-peer auctions. In this situation, they can still create auctions but are required to consign the wine to Bid for Wine’s bonded account for storage during an auction. Bid for Wine will then manage the sales process, take payment and arrange delivery.
